Jamezil, the caravan master, is totally shocked by what he finds. He was at the Oasis of the Hunchback a few days ago and found it deserted, so he didn’t hear the big news. He left and wandered aimlessly in the desert for many days.

“It is incredible” he admits scratching his head. “I never got lost in the desert, but last week I was completely stranded. And now I’ve got to Quollaba and I find it destroyed.”

Zamira asks you to stay and help her rebuild the city. You ponder whether to do so or leave with your bag of Desert Tears.

Hey… wait a minute, there is something strange in the gem pouch! It is moving! You throw the bag to the ground and draw your weapons. The gems are… hatching, and small, three-eyed snakes emerge from them!

You quickly stomp them with the heels of your boots. You curse the fact that you definitely won’t get very rich this time!

But Zamira is a generous queen and she orders her new Counselor to hand you a purse.

“I have to rebuild a city, but a queen knows how to reward her saviours” she adds with a smile.

You weigh it in your hand. It isn’t fat as the gem pouch, but the gold inside is definitely real. The queen’s purse contains 1,000 Moons for each hero! (but see Reward! below)

Advance!

Do you receive an Advance? That’s a conditional ‘yes’ – see below!

Firstly, savaged.us DOES NOT WORK properly so please, please, please use the books to plan your Advance (I even put together a guide for you with links to Skill and Edge summary tables; you can find Power summaries on page 120 of the book, and the page for your Arcane Background will tell you what Powers you’re allowed).

Adding the Advance to your character on savaged.us is fine but you can’t rely on it to tell you what’s valid. It will leave out Skills, Powers and Edges that you’re eligible for and tell you that you’re eligible for ones that you aren’t.

So my condition is that if you turn up to play with an Advance that’s not valid, you will lose that Advance!

Reward!

Beasts & Barbarians uses the ‘After the Adventure’ setting rule (page 140) to mimic the trope from the stories where the hero wins a king’s ransom in one tale only to start the next one penniless again.

So after this adventure you have 200 Moons remaining to squirrel away, spend on new gear or otherwise do with as you will.

Where the rest went is up to you – maybe you drank it away in taverns, gave it to the poor or were robbed by bandits.

Additionally you can test your luck on the After the Adventure table if you wish. If you do, don’t spend your Moons yet: we’ll draw cards for the table next time we meet up.

Dramatis Personae

Zanator, the Tyrant of Quollaba (Caldeian sorceror)

Ulasha the Devourer (demon)

Nekerios, a captain of the Tyrant’s guards

Sulak, First Counselor to the Tyrant

Zamira, First Concubine of the Tyrant (rightful Queen of Quollaba)

Unoch, Queen’s Eunuch

Gulan, an agent of Zamira

Amib, innkeeper of the Snake Inn

Katu, proprietor of the Oasis of the Hunchback

Tul, a holy man of the desert

After your defeat of Ulasha, queen Zamira’s harem girls tend to your wounds while the eunuchs go out into the city to find food and water.
